Hi, friends! Happy Monday! What are YOU up to these days? One project we’ve been putting off is redoing our basement flooring. We finally made a decision, so come check out what we chose! It’s vinyl flooring for the basement!
Our house is about 12 years old and we’ve lived here for just over two years. The carpet in the basement was in rough shape when we moved in and we knew it. We simply covered the worst spots with rugs and runners. But we have a dog, 3 grand-dogs and one grand baby. So, we figured it was time to replace the stained carpet with a baby and puppy friendly flooring option. This is the great room in the basement. You can see the discolored carpet at well as the indentions in the carpet left from various heavy furniture pieces. (And my husband’s practice putting mat.)
This carpeted area is off of the basement great room and in front of the kitchenette. Again, the carpet is badly stained. Recently we had guests come in to play golf for the weekend and this area looked terrible!
Since the carpet was beyond repair, we opted for a quick fix. An inexpensive carpet runner from Lowe’s. Better!
But none of the quick fixes were adequate for long term. It was time to address and fix the problem. We love to support local small business, so we turned to a trusted local professional, Westport Flooring! We explained to them our situation and they gave us our best options.
Originally we wanted real hardwood floors in the basement, but the flooring experts recommended vinyl flooring. Moisture can build naturally between concrete and whatever you top it with. If wood gets damp or wet it can buckle and warp. Real hardwoods were out of the question.
After looking at dozens of samples and discussing our options, we decided to go with a luxury vinyl floor by Shaw Floors. The great room and the guest rooms in the basement are connected by 12 X 12 brown and tan tile. The tile is still in great shape so we decided to keep it. Plus, we didn’t want the added cost of ripping out the tile in order to replace it with vinyl. The color we chose is called Foresta and matches the tile quite well!
Vinyl flooring has come a LONG way! Today’s vinyl comes with a stamped and textured pattern that mimics the look and feel of real hardwood floors. (This is the back of the flooring sample which shows how it will look on a large scale basis.) I think it’s going to be really pretty! Also, vinyl flooring is low maintenance and less expensive than hardwoods. Win-win!
We still haven’t decided exactly what to do with the great room once the new flooring is in. Should it be a game room, an exercise space or a home theatre? Or all of the above? It’s really not a huge room so we will need to be strategic. The room desperately needs to be repainted so I think I’ll take the opportunity of having the furniture away from the walls to patch, paint and freshen up the space.
And guess what? The installers are here as we speak! They are moving very quickly and have already removed the carpet from the great room and one of the bedrooms. I can hardly wait until they are done, but alas, they said it will take two days to complete the job. Then the REAL fun will begin! The basement refresh should be complete before the holidays! Yippee!!
Well, time to go help move some furniture in the basement! I’ll keep you posted on the progress! Have a great day my friends and stay well and safe! xoxo Dell
