I really enjoy reading! But only when I feel like it. And only if it’s something I’m interested in. And only when I’m not on a time table. So this makes me a terrible book club participant!
I live in a terrific neighborhood. My neighbors are kind, thoughtful and enjoy each other’s company. We started a book club several years ago and it was great fun but half of the time people didn’t finish the book or even read the book. (Guilty!) It was more an excuse to get together to socialize which was the best part for me! But over time it fizzled out with everyone’s busy schedules and children’s activities. This is me trying to pick a book to read…
About a year ago we decided to give the book club another go. This time we wanted a serious book club. We would read best sellers and classics and require everyone read the book in order to attend the club meeting. I was all in! I hosted the first book club at my house and I did actually read the book. It was a successful meeting and discussion and we all had fun! We were off to a great start! That was last November. I think it was the last book I read for book club. (Disclaimer-I have read several other books but not the assigned ones.) Meanwhile the book club has continued on with and without me.
Last month we were supposed to read “Versions of Us”, by Laura Bennett. I really had planned on reading it but when one of our neighbors (who is very intellectual) said she had to take notes in order to keep the characters and story straight, well…. I knew right away it was not my kind of book. It sounded like WAY too much work.
Thus, I came up with a brilliant idea! I am going to start a Phantom Book Club! It will be a monthly meeting where friends can get together, drink wine, have snacks and talk ABOUT books! It can be books we have read, books we plan to read or ones we started to read and were so bad we didn’t bother to finish. We can even bring a book we finished and give it to someone else who is interested. We could donate our old books to the library or retirement home. I am willing to host the first one! Who’s in?
