Happy Tuesday, sweet friends! My husband discovered a secret a few months ago and I thought I’d share it with you! He found that any sub sandwich you can order at Jersey Mike’s can also be ordered in a salad form. They call it a “sub-in-a-tub”! Have you had one?
If you are like us, you try to save on carbs and calories when you can. However, for convenience, we like to order out every now and again. And we particularly love Jersey Mike’s! They have a yummy Italian sub which has a generous amount of meat and cheese. One regular size sub or wrap costs $8.25 and has about 680 calories. And all of those carbs & calories from the bread are just not good thing for either of us!
So, a few months ago my husband, Brad, discovered you can order any sub on Jersey Mike’s menu in a salad form, for the same price. It’s the same amount of meats and cheese that comes on a sub, except it comes in a bowl~instead of on bread. Then you can have it, “Mike’s Way” which includes onions, lettuce, tomatoes, olive oil blend, red wine vinegar, and spices. We like to order an “Italian Sub in a Tub, Mike’s way, with pickles and yellow peppers.” And it’s delicious! This dish is significantly lower in calories and is approx. 380 calories versus 680.
After ordering Jersey Mike’s Italian Sub in a Tub a few times, we decided to make our own! So, here’s what we order from the deli at our local grocery store:
- ½ pound sandwich pepperoni, sliced thin
- ½ pound genoa salami, sliced thin
- 1 pound ham (we like Boar’s Head Deluxe ham), sliced thin
- ⅛ pound proscuitto (We buy it in the pre-sliced packs, near the deli section or you can have it sliced)
- ½ pound provolone cheese, sliced thin
- Beano’s Original Submarine Dressing
From the produce section:
- lettuce
- tomatoes
- cucumbers
- red onions to taste
Directions:
On a plate, place a layer of chopped lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and onions. Set aside.
On a butcher block layer the following:
3 folded slices of ham
3 slices of pepperoni
3 slices of salami
1 slice proscuitto
2 sliced provolone cheese
Slice the stack of meat and cheese down the middle and into bite size pieces and place on top of lettuce mixture. Top with Sub Dressing, and salt and pepper to taste.
NOTE: “Brad’s Way” is with Red Wine Vinegar and Olive oil instead of the Sub Dressing. And he likes to sprinkle the top with Italian Seasoning and fresh ground pepper.
I figure it cost’s about $30 for the meats and cheeses at the grocery store and it makes enough salads for 4 days, for 2 people . At Jersey Mike’s the same 8 meals would cost us around $66. Guess who’s being super thrifty? And you know what that means? More money for important things, like chandeliers. Score!
Naturally, you can substitute any of the meats, cheeses and toppings for ones that suit your fancy, but we think we have a winner with our home-grown version. Mike’s Way? Or Brad’s Way? We love both and we feel like we are watching our carbs and calories while enjoying a quick, easy and delicious dish! The other sub in a tub dishes are equally as good I’m sure, but we haven’t tried them yet. Let me know which is your favorite?
Well, I”m off to mail a gift to my favorite tiny Leprechaun! I hope you have a fabulous day! xoxo Dell

I didn’t realize Jersey Mike’s had a breadless option! Made this sub in a tub at home today, but also added a bit of red hots, delicious!
Yes they do! And they are delicious, but a bit pricey which is why we make them ourselves. A bit of red hots sounds yummy! Thanks friend!
