Happy Tuesday, friends! This is an exciting week for our family! Thursday is our only grandchild’s first birthday! Come see how we plan to celebrate this momentus occasion and how to make a birthday banner!
My husband calls Thursday “The Blessed Day” because not only is it our grandson’s birthday, but my husband’s as well. Hence, the blessed part. LOL. (My husband also calls our grandson his doppelgänger even though they are 60 years and 17 minutes or so apart.) Obviously we are both smitten with our grandson and can’t wait to celebrate his first birthday with him and his sweet parents. To mark the baby’s first year, my daughter-in-law saw a cute idea on Pinterest and wanted to recreate something similar with photos from the first year of his life. I had a banner kit in my stash and decided it would be perfect to make a birthday banner!
I bought this banner kit from Michael’s a few years ago intending to use it for a bridal shower. (The kit came from the bridal section by His & Hers for about $7, in case you are wondering.) The kit comes with each pennant tied together and has 24 banner pieces. Each piece measure about 4X6 inches with the cutout on the bottom. So, on my computer I went to CVS.com and clicked on the photo section. Then I downloaded about 40 of my favorite pictures of our baby from the last year beginning with a picture on the day he was born. (The original blessed day.) The pictures were ready in a few short hours. I picked them up and chose 23 of my favorites and ran them by the kids. They approved, so I set to work. I trimmed each picture down to a smaller size using an Xacto knife so each photo was now about 3 ¾ X 4 inches to better fit the banner pieces. I spread the banner out on the floor and arranged the pictures in chronological order.
Using Elmer’s Glue, I squeezed a small bead of glue around the sides and center of each picture and pressed it into place. NOTE: Be sure not to use too much glue as it will squeeze out the sides or through the back of the banner.
I decided to do this project on the concrete floor in my treasure room so it didn’t matter if I got any glue on the floor or if it stuck a little. (It didn’t) I glued the pictures in order from birth until present and left one banner empty on the end, so they can add a picture from his birthday. The banner is such a sweet reminder of how much our precious grandson has grown over the past year and he really has! He went from a tiny little nearly 7 pounder to 25 pounds and is now crawling and oh so close to walking! And talk about a personality! This little guy is so smart and funny. I can’t wait to hear what he has to say when he learns to talk!
The birthday banner turned out so sweet. We will give it to our grandson on his birthday and his parents can hang it in his nursery, or in his playroom. I have an extra banner kit that I’ll give to my DIL so they can do one for his second year if they wish. This banner was so easy to do and so much fun! Of course if you are extra crafty, you can surely make your own banner and string it all together yourself. But, I admit this was way easier!
The gifts are all wrapped and we are ready for the BIG DAY! Now just to wait until Thursday! I hope you have a wonderful day! Be sure to check in later this week for more birthday fun! Much love, Dell
