TGIF, friends! If you follow along with me, you know I don’t have much of a green thumb when it comes to indoor plants. But, I’m happy to report that I successfully learned how to grow paper white flowers from bulbs! If I can do it, anyone can!
Around Christmas time I ordered some paper white bulbs online. My plan was to plant them and have them in full bloom by the holidays. Unfortunately, I forgot about them so that didn’t happen. But a few weeks ago I spotted the bulbs in the garage and decided to give it a whirl. So, I planted them in a large pot I had on hand. I watered them and put them in a sunny spot in the corner of our kitchen. Within a week they looked like this!
I kid you not, the stalks literally grew a few inches every couple of days! I felt like such a successful gardener! So, as the paper whites grew taller and taller, I decided to transplant them into two smaller plastic pots that would fit into my big urn in the dining room.
In just a few short weeks the roots had grown quite a bit underneath the soil. (Much more so than I would have guessed.) I took the pot outside so I wouldn’t make a big mess and gently wiggled the bulbs and roots apart. I separated the bulbs into three different containers. The two best looking containers went into a large urn that I keep on the sideboard in the dining room. (I was sure to put plastic paper underneath the pots so they won’t leak as I water them.) I added a garland of greenery around the base of the urn to cover up the exposed pots. Now here is how they look!
The nice thing about the bulbs being in two round pots is I can rotate each of the pots inside the big urn so the stalks grow straight. The delicate white flowers are so neutral and pretty and they are not even halfway finished blooming!
Aren’t they so pretty? And they smell divine, too! I had to look it up, but I discovered after the paper whites finish blooming, I can plant them in the ground. Then next spring I can enjoy them all over again!
Now I’m thinking this would make a GREAT gift next year for family and friends, don’t you agree? Just plant some festive containers with a few bulbs and let others enjoy them as they begin to bloom!
I’m still over here patting myself on the back about how beautifully my bulbs turned out. I wish I could take more credit, but honestly, if they had jumped in the pot by themselves, they would have done the same thing. But now I’m a little emboldened and might try my hand at growing some flowers and herbs from seeds this spring. Who’s with me? I think we can do it!! And just think of all of the money we’ll save….
Well, it’s almost time to welcome in the weekend with a glass of wine. Of course, I”ll wait until the socially acceptable 5:00. So, cheers and have a great weekend! Much love, Dell
