Greetings and Happy Monday! I’m excited to share my latest eBay find with you! It’s an entire set of vintage plates and cups we are using for my future daughter in law’s bridal shower. The pattern is called Homestead Snack Set….
This all started a few weeks back when I was at the lake shopping. I love scoping out consignment and thrift stores for unexpected goodies. Honestly, you never know what you’ll find! I found a lot of 27 glass vintage looking plates for $1 each. And of course I bought ALL of them. They are scalloped shaped plates with a leaf-vine etched pattern.
After I blogged about my thrift store glass plates, a friend of mine did some sleuthing and discovered the name of the pattern. So, I searched on eBay and found several more plates. One set of four plates was $2.50 but the shipping was $14. So, not exactly a bargain. But, I was determined to have enough plates for the bridal shower so I bought 8 more…I declare, once I get something in my head, I’m obsessed!
Then I found a complete set with four plates and four glass cups. The cups resemble the old fashioned punch cups that came with a glass punch bowl. (Why don’t people use punch bowls anymore?) The plates and cups were sold in sets of four and called a snack set. They were made back in the 1950’s and were probably quite the thing back in the day when people still played cards at home and did more entertaining. I picture someone asking for several sets of these as wedding or shower gifts. These boxes are clearly original and look like something Laura Petrie of the Dick Van Dyke show would have received as a gift.
I love the fact they are still in the original packaging. And I do love vintage….
Now, I’m determined to find more glass cups to use at the bridal shower. I have a vintage punch bowl with cups that my mother in law gave to me recently. I’m excited to use it at the shower especially since she will be there! The snack plates have a little indented place to set the cup so you can hold the plate and cup at the same time. I’m thinking I can go to another thrift store and find some of these cups for pretty cheap. It will be like a grown up tea party!
I remembered I have a snack set similar that my Grandmother gave me years ago. Sadly I’ve never used them but I admit I don’t host a lot of tea parties. These plates and cups are glass as well but have grape clusters instead of leaves. So pretty and dainty though! I have four plates and four cups. I’ll take these with me too although they won’t stack with the others. I will at least use the cups. I bet my Mother will get a kick out of it!
I’m actually thinking that it doesn’t matter if the cups exactly match the plates as long as they will fit into the cup holder on the plates. I remember seeing several punch bowls with cups at the thrift store for as little as $7 for the set and just buying them for the cups. Anyone need 3 punch bowls? Maybe use them as food and water bowls for Lacey? She is a fancy girl after all.
Anyway, we now have plenty of plates for the shower and any other future family event. We alternate hosting Thanksgiving dinner between my brother and me so these will come in handy for our salad or dessert plates.
Want to know something interesting? I have a set of antique china from my Grandmother and I thought the dinner plates were missing, but actually the dinner plates were much smaller back in the day and have gotten larger and larger over the years. So, what I thought were the salad plates were actually the dinner plates. Hmmmm. Maybe we should use these Homestead snack plates as dinner plates? Talk about portion control! 😉
We are less than three weeks from the bridal shower. I can’t wait to share the fun details later, but figure I can’t ruin a surprise with serving pieces! Who else LOVES eBay?
Thank you for stopping by! Please feel free to share with me your favorite eBay or thrift store find. I love hearing from you! xoxo Dell
