Happy Thursday, my friends! I thought I’d share with you my latest project! I just finished making over one of our guest rooms. It still needs some finishing touches, but the hard work is done! Come see how it now looks!
This is where I started. I completed the makeover on our other guest room a few weeks back, so it was time to tackle this one. We call it Nicky’s room since this is where our younger son stays when he visits. And despite the fact he loves the room dark like this, I wanted it to be lighter and brighter. And I’m the Momma.
To complicate matters, there is this little nook in the middle of the room. I knew I was going to rearrange the room after I painted so I had to contend with this tricky little dilemma.
There is only one window in the room and it had heavy, dark curtains and a shade. Even though they are very nicely made, it all felt too heavy and dark in this space. I took them down and donated them to Christian Ministries.
The two back walls on each side of the nook were padded and upholstered with the same fabric as the curtains.
This is a close up of the fabric. It’s pretty, but I decided to go in a different direction in this room.
There was brown plastic trim around the edges of the fabric walls. This trim was the first thing to go. It turns out it was glued on and simple to remove.
Using needle nose pliers, I pulled the fabric and batting off of the walls.
Once the fabric and batting was removed, there were still tufts of batting left behind, so all of those were pulled out with a tack lifter and needle nose pliers. It was a BIG job.
I repeated the same process on the other side of the room. Then I patched and sanded all of the staple and tack holes. All one million of them. Then I painted the room with Benjamin Moore’s Tapestry Beige. It took nearly two gallons of paint to cover the dark brown.
Once the painting was done, I rearranged the furniture. In order to make sense of the alcove, the only solution was to center the bed in the middle of it. I have a sweet little vintage shelf that may go in the nook, but I’m still thinking about it. For now I’m loving the simplicity.
I edited the furniture a bit but still used some of my favorite pieces, such as the dresser and mirror that belonged to my husband’s grandmother. To the left of the bed is a large leather chair and ottoman that was in the office in our last house. Now when we have company, they have a comfy spot to read or relax.
Since Nic often works remotely when he visits, I wanted to make sure he has a nice work space. This is my old desk and it fits perfectly!
There was a little extra room to the left of the closet so I added another chair and table. This way if we have a couple stay in this room, there will be extra seating.
And a before and after! I kept the same bedding and furniture. I love how much lighter and brighter this room is now! In lieu of the curtains and heavy shade, I opted for a honeycomb blackout shade by Allen & Roth. It’s white, so it blends in well and can completely disappear when pushed all the way up in the window. But when you pull it down, it really darkens the room. Now the room is nice and bright during the day and dark and cozy at night! Win-win!
The only out-of-pocket costs of this makeover was two gallons of paint and a new window shade. Not too bad! Now I have enough money to pay my electrician to switch out some fixtures for me! Chandelier, anyone?
Now both of our newly renovated guest rooms have guests! I’m so glad I got these rooms put together before they arrived! I hope they will be comfortable and feel pampered and loved while they visit! Thank YOU for visiting today and always! Have a lovely day! xoxo Dell
