Happy Wednesday, Friends! Are you snowed in? We only got a few inches of snow in our area, but it continues to slow things down. Welcome to the South! I thought I’d share with you a quick project I did the other day. I added gold leaf paint to some candle holders. Come see how they turned out!
I bought these two black candle sticks a few years ago. The stickers on the bottom say they are from The Bombay Company, but I bought them at a consignment store for a fraction of the original cost. They are tall, heavy, and have a great shape. This is how they looked before:
They are pretty as is, but I wanted to add them to a set of other gold candle holders I already had. Since there is power in numbers, I decided to paint them to match the others. Then I will display them together. This is my go-to gold leaf paint. It’s by Rub-n-buff. I’ve had this tube for months and it’s finally almost empty. Time to stock up! ( 1/2 oz. Tube of Rub-n-Buff Gold Leaf paint )
I like working on a black background anyway, so this project was quick and easy. I simply squeezed a small amount of the paint on a flat brush and dry brushed the entire candle stick. I like to leave a bit of the black peaking through so it looks like authentic gold leaf. See how the details pop with the gold leaf?
Literally this took me 10 minutes to paint both candle sticks. I wiped the excess paint off with a clean cloth and let them dry for a bit. Now they are ready to join their new buddies!
I put them with three other tall, gold candle holders and arranged them in front of the fireplace. I added white pillar candles and some Christmas candle wreaths I had on hand. Instantly, they are a set!
They look pretty lit, but as you know, open flames are risky. I will replace the white pillar candles with battery operated candles by Luminara instead. ( Luminara Flameless Candle here ) It’s the same effect, but oh so much safer. And, the battery operated candles can be placed on a timer-which is even more handy! Luminara candles are available as a single candle or in a set. An ivory Luminara candle measures approximately 3.5″ X 5″ tall and can be found on Amazon for $18.04. Or, you can save a bit by ordering a set of 3 with a remote control for $65.99. ( Set of 3 Candles here) They make great gifts too!
The Christmas candle wreaths are from Ace Hardware years ago, but you can find similar ones here: ( Christmas Candle Ring )
TIP: If you order online, make sure it says “meant for a 3″ or 3.5″ pillar candle” or else you may order something too large or too small. #donethat
This group of candle holders was bought at three different stores. Yet, with similar finishes, and accessories, they look like a cohesive set. I’m guessing a set like this would cost a pretty penny, too! Isn’t paint amazing?
Little by little we are getting ready for Christmas. I even wrapped a few gifts over the weekend! I’ll share a few of our favorite Christmas decorations and traditions over the next few weeks. Stay safe and warm! Let’s chat soon? xo Dell

May I ask you how much you got the candle sticks for at the consignment store? I just bought these second hand and would love to price compare. :). Might even make them gold at Christmas time. You have a great touch.
Hi Chris! Thank you for your kind comment! And I don’t recall exactly what I paid for the candle stick holders, but I think it was around $20 for the pair. I remember thinking it was a good deal at the time, especially since they came from The Bombay Company! Good luck painting yours! Have a great day and thank you so much for following along! xoxo Dell
Thanks for your reply Dell. :). $20 is a phenomenal deal from what I can gather. I paid $50 for mine but they both did come with two massive unused wife candles as well. Thanks for the feedback and hope you have a great fall season. Chris.
Thank you so much Chris! I’m looking forward to cooler weather for sure! Hope you have a great fall as well! xoxo Dell
