Even though this will be our 5th summer at the lake house, I still get excited when I unlock the front door and step inside. The familiar “lakey” smell of the house instantly reminds me of how much I love this place and how far its come in four short years!
When we bought the house the entire main floor was covered in green carpet. The fireplace was the original red brick and the back of the fireplace was the first thing you saw when you entered the front door. This is actually a picture of the entry way from the real estate listing which showed the red brick and the piano. The piano was “not conveyed”.
The first thing we did was rip out all of the carpet and install hardwood floors. (sounds simple when put like that!) We painted the brick with a semi gloss white paint. We thought of distressing the paint so some of the brick would come through but decided we liked the look of the crisp white paint for now. I bought a pretty console table from our sweet next door neighbors who own an art gallery. It fit the spot perfectly. I love the curvy wrought iron legs and the leaf carvings on the top. I’ve actually had these brass lamps for about 25 years. I bought some new burlap drum shades and some brass anchor finials and they look as good as new! I’m not sure why but the (only) outlet is in the ceiling above the brick, so that’s where we plug them in. 🙂 I filled the large urn with sea shells that were all around the yard and some potpourri from Pier 1. I added an antique duck decoy and a captain’s bell. The large mirror is from a consignment shop.
To the left of of the entry we put a fun zebra chest with drawers for storage. (also from a consignment store) The heron print is from Posters.com and I put it in a gold frame that I bought from Goodwill. The frame, mat and glass were in great shape so I just substituted my print for the old one. No spot would be complete without a fisherman lamp! (eBay)
This is a view from the den into the the entry way. The fireplace is in the middle of the space.
And this is where Lacey patrols the comings and goings in her lake yard.
We left the original front door and just painted it white. (from its former green color). We also left the original glass door knob which I LOVE. In the other corner (not shown) is a coat rack and wing chair. Eventually I’d like to move the antique hall tree down here. (from a precious antique of the week post) I think it would be perfect in the entry way! For now, we like it just as it is. And as long as Lacey has a glass door that she can see through, she likes it fine too! Here’s another look at the before and after. Have a wonderful day!
