Dining Room Sideboard

This sideboard is one of my favorite pieces.   I found it at a consignment store while we were in temporary housing and building this house in PA.   Needless to say it was screaming my name!

We moved around the country more than a few times over the course of my husband’s career.  It was always a challenge trying to settle in quickly to new surroundings and get the boys settled into a new school and neighborhood.  They were champs about the whole process.  The last move from Colorado to PA was probably the toughest on everyone, so that year for Christmas the boys got pretty much everything they wanted!   I always treated myself to a “happy moving gift to me” present.   So, when I found this piece, I knew this was it!

Usually my husband and I consult on big purchases but I was afraid this one would slip away if I didn’t jump on it.  (I’m happy to say that we are still married and now he loves it.)   It was delivered to our small apartment and it took up most of the kitchen, but I knew it would be perfect for our soon to be dining room.

I loved the large size and shape of the sideboard.    It is about six feet long and two feet wide.  The owner of the consignment store told me that the piece had been hand painted on the top and was featured in the Philadelphia Home Show.  It was love at first sight!

We don’t have a matching dining room suite.    As a matter of fact most of our furniture isn’t part of a set but collected over time.  We bought our cherry dining room table and chairs when we moved into our second house.  A sweet friend gave us an antique china cabinet.  I figured the antique sideboard would be an interesting addition.   I could have a piece of glass cut to put on the top and actually use it as a serving piece, but I think it would take away from its charm.  So, nothing is allowed to sit on top except for my pretty lamps and flower arrangement.  At the holidays it gets a seasonal makeover, but usually this is how it looks.   A keeper for sure!  <3
