Happy Friday, Friends! I must admit, I’m a little mad at Spring this year. First of all, it only arrived two days ago. Secondly, just as we are about to move, my lilac bushes decided to bloom for the first time ever. What’s up with that?
My husband and I have toiled in this yard for the last 15 years. We built the house and started the yard from scratch. Well, we did get the obligatory builder plants which mostly we plucked out and replaced. (Does anyone even like junipers?) Mostly it has been a labor of love since we both enjoy working outside and love seeing the fruits of our labors. Other than the two cherry trees out front, we replaced everything.
I especially love flowers and if they are beautiful and they smell nice it’s a double bonus! So imagine my delight/disappointment when I saw my lilacs in bloom this week. For the first time since I planted them. And, yes. They decided to bloom three weeks before we are leaving here forever.
I guess I could be upset they never bloomed before despite my planting them, and the years of pampering and encouragement. Instead I see it as a final thank you and farewell tribute. So, I went outside, snapped a few pictures, then clipped them ALL off and brought them inside so we can enjoy them to their fullest! They are beautiful and smell absolutely divine!
I put the lilacs in my favorite silver vase and put it in the kitchen on the bar. The minute you walk into the kitchen now all you smell is lilacs. I love it! The wall behind the bar looks empty since I already took down the picture that hung there. I’m starting the sad process of taking down the wall decor and patching and painting. 🙁 At least the lilacs are cheering me up!
I am definitely planting lilacs immediately at our new house! And they had best bloom within a reasonable amount of time. Also on my must-have list are my all time favorite, peonies. I especially love the pink ones! The flowers don’t last very long but when they bloom, they are show stoppers! Don’t you agree? And they make the most amazing cut flowers.
This year we seem to be right in between seasons. It appears we are leaving the Northeast just as everything is blooming and the blooms in North Carolina are subsiding. I fear our azaleas at our lake house will be gone by the time we get there. Looking on the bright side, next year we will be there for the entire glorious season! At least we get to see our cherry trees bloom one last time here. So pretty!
I’m a little jealous because I keep seeing people with their cars packed to the brim with beautiful ferns, herbs, vegetable plants and flowers. Normally this time of year I am doing exactly the same thing. But, the movers are coming in two weeks, so there is no point. My poor urns look sad and neglected while the lilacs and cherry trees are showing off. I promise, my darlings, you will all soon be filled with the best Mother Nature has to offer! Here is a picture of my ferns from last year. Such an easy and obliging plant, right?
And the big urn from last year. Love, love.
Here are a few of my all time favorite plants. I know for sure these will all make an appearance at either Happy Hill, the new house, or both! The ever gorgeous Mandeville! Again, my favorite color is pink. My obelisk is coming with us too. It makes such a perfect support system for climbers such as the Mandeville or clematis.
This perennial clematis is also a favorite. As much as I love pink flowers, white ones are my second favorite. There is something simple and classic about white and green.
My windmill will be hauled to the next house too. We bought it in Colorado and has surprisingly survived the wind and winters of Pennsylvania!
Another lovely Clematis…
Follow me South, my lovelies! What’s your favorite flower? The beauty of planting perennials is they reward us year after year with blooms and fragrance. I think it’s finally Spring! Who’s ready to plant?
Thank you for stopping by and supporting my little blog! I would love it if you would share me with your friends! I wish you all a lovely weekend! xoxo Dell
